I'm with ya. I took part in Celebrate Recovery while I was in Missouri at my parents' church. Their 12 steps have scripture along with them and also are set up to include more than alcohol, but all our "hurts, habits, and hangups". The focus is completely in Christ for recovery.

Well first of all I have 2 quotes from 2 amazing men of God. Neil Cole, author of Organic Church, says 'we need to lessen what it means to be a church, and increase what it means to be a disciple.' The other quote is by John Piper from Let the Nations Be Glad, 'Missions exists because Worships does not.' (In other words, the end goal of missions is to bring the Worship of God to those people who do not have it.) Such as Rev 5:9/7:9. So does SS make us complacent? I think yes and no. Traditionally SS is not about building leaders, but relationships. Traditionally in church that is our main concern relationships. We MUST focus on building leaders. And there are several ways of doing that. But when our strategy focuses something different, then we will become complacent.
And on your worship statement, YES!!!! Depending on how you define worship. For me, I look at worship as Ps. 46:10, Ps. 2:8, and other verses like it. These verses are worship, but it has nothing to do ABOUT US!!!! It is all about realizing that God will be exalted in all the earth. That is worship. Now we can tie that into Matt 22:37- 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' For true worship to happen, we must love God these 3 ways. And when we talk about mind, this does not happen. Cause when we talk about mind, we are talking strategy, vision, what we teach, how we teach it... These are BIG issues. And all of these would change whether or not a church is complacent. So more teaching is needed or maybe I should more training. Cause there is a difference. When someone teaches us, we learn something new. But when someone trains us, we desire to be different. Training will change a church from being complacent to being on the GO! And discipleship will push them further!!!! So YES, everything will spawn from worship. BUT first we have to make sure we know what true worship REALLY IS!!!!

Adam your on the money with that! When we truly grasp the purpose of what Jesus has called us to do it will cause us to focus on different things thus changing our approach. Totally agree about the pastors not being seed sowers and stopping at salvation.

I agree here on these points as well. But when we look into scripture we see that for 3 years the disciples did not get it. Paul was continually rallying his churches to be disciples as well. Some did, but many did not; and 1 Cor 3:10-15 (Paul new the difference between good disciples and bad disciples). Even Jesus spoke about the weeds among the harvest. I mean this good disciple/bad disciple is spoken continually throughout the NT. So I do not believe it is Sunday School that is the problem, but the strategy in which we use it. And I know you will agree with me. So with that said I think the issue is not one of lack of caring (and in many places it is), but it is one of competence. Cause we do teach believers how to share the gospel, and many can teach others how to have a quiet time and pray. BUT THAT IS NOT ENOUGH!!!! We must be teaching them the next step. We stop at salvation, and making disciples is not 100% just salvation (although it is the starting point). What have in America today is wrong DNA. We have leaders in the church who were never seed sowers, but are now pastors and teachers of our church. They skipped several steps!!!! We must move beyond the pulpit, and get into homes. Meaning every believer needs to be able to 'contend in the cause of the gospel' as the women did, which Paul spoke of in Philippians 4. The is more to making disciples than just sharing the gospel. There is so much more. And there are 2 VENUES in which we can train ALL BELIEVERS to move forward and that is: Sunday School and in homes. This is where it will start. But first we need to teach the church what to OBEY, cause that part WE ARE DISPARATELY MISSING!!!!
