The “Undies” show your appreciation

My wife is big fan of “The Office” and to be honest I’d rather have a root canal than have to listen to Michael Scott put his foot in his mouth. It just makes me uncomfortable. One thing that he does well however is honor his employees. He views them like family, however dysfunctional that family may be.

On that note I have served in places where adult volunteers were scarce at best and the majority of interaction with the students on a weeknight came from my wife and I. Through much prayer and seeking God has blessed us with a fantastic team of adult volunteers and this past year we decided to take a page from the Michael Scott playbook. On “The Office” they have an annual awards dinner, where they hand out silly trophies, called the “Dundees” and in the spirit of the “Dundees” we had our Underground awards dinner and called it “the Undies”
It was really simple, we cooked up dinner for our leaders and invited them and their spouses to attend a fun evening. I got a handful of students to participate as waiters and waitresses, and we ate and fellowshipped together. Then I showed a few funny videos that I’d put together (see Get Wet Tonight), and then came the best part. One by one we brought each adult on stage talked about their work with our students and our appreciation and then gave them a framed pair of “undies” with their funny award title on it. The awards were something like a quote they had said that was funny, or something to do with their job on Wednesdays (for example my dad runs the cafe’ for us and his award was “A Dr. Pepper & a Reese’s”).

The awards aren’t really the point, the honoring of that adult is. The fellowship is fantastic and you’ll create memories that’ll last for years to come. So maybe you don’t have to go all out like Michael Scott and you can certainly be more tactful, but get out there and honor your adult volunteers they deserve it.
