What’s up with that

Ok, so I’ll admit it, I try and stay awake on Saturday nights to catch SNL. And like most people I like some sketches and don’t care for others. One in particular that I don’t really care for, although I think the song is catchy, is “What’s up with that?” I think I fail to find it humorous because I’m constantly waiting for the gag, and when its over I realize that the whole skit is one gag. See I see the big name guest star sitting there, and I can’t wait to see what funny thing they’re gonna have James Franco say and then its just “OOOOOOO EEEEEEE What’s up with that? What’s up with that?…” The host is constantly caught up on his own groove, his own hype and we never get to hear from James Franco or any of the other big name guests that sit on stage as glorified extras.
But it was this afternoon as I walked into work that I started humming that silly song, and God reminded me that I’m a lot like that. I’ve invited Him into my ministry, my home, my life and too often all I do is dance around like an idiot singing my own praises. I have the biggest guest star of all time in my presence and I let Him sit there patiently waiting for a chance to speak to me, and I won’t give Him a moment. “What’s up with that?”
I believe that we fall victim to the trap that the enemy has laid out for guys/gals like us, those who are attempting to change the world one life at a time, our own selfish egos. Whether its because we’re so busy working for Jesus that we forget to spend time with Jesus, or we’re busy patting ourselves on the back because 100 junior high schoolers came to our midweek service we miss out on what God wants to say to us, cause we’re constantly singing our own praises or thinking how can “I” improve that program or event or space. “OOOOO EEEEEEE What’s up with that? What’s up with that?” My hearts cry for those of us that work with youth is that we will stay in touch with the heart beat of God. That not only will we listen but we’ll remember its His show in the first place.
