I hate games…

I hate youth group games! I always have. Even before they figured out that chubby bunny could kill you. I have never enjoyed playing them, and I like only slighty more the daunting task of finding them to play on Wednesday nights. But can I tell you something that I’ve found out? I’m weird! I mean in more than just my facial hair or how I eat a Reese’s, but in the fact that I don’t like games! The majority of students (especially jr. highers) absolutely love them. Shocked, ME TOO!!! Anyway, that fact in our minds they are, unfortunately, important to the flow and enjoyment factor of your group. Here’s a couple ways that I use them:
When my group was small enough we did the whole everybody play together, and we still do that occasionally. Of those type of games my favorites are the ones with partners, especially the ones where they constantly change partners (ie. gorilla, man, gun). That allows for the most interaction between students which is at least a small benefit in my mind.
Now we primarily do contests or games that require only a handful of teens and we have them do it on the stage. We place a box out front, in the portion of our building where they hang out before service, and kids sign up to compete in what we call the mystery game. Then depending on what game it is we draw out the number of names we need to compete. This way people like me who hate games don’t have to play and they can still enjoy the game. So while I continue to pray for new evidence that teenagers really don’t like games, I’ll keep at em and I suggest you do as well.
